My Short Story

My short story...
"Get out of bed Scott!  We slept in."  Scott curls up into a ball and pulls the covers over his face to cover the blinding light as his mother scurries out of the room.  "Gary is taking you to school today.  I have a business call."
She walks out of the room.  Scott knows what's really going on.  His mom got fired from her job as a secretary for not showing up to work, on the other hand Gary, his step father, is unemployed.  He gets out of his bed and walks to his bathroom.  Just as he opens the door he is hit with a stench of scotch rolling out of the bathroom.  Scott takes off his clothes and walks into the shower turning the water as hot as it can go.  It wakes him right up and he shampoos his hair like always and walks out.
After drying himself off Scott hears screaming.  "Gary, get out of the house, now.  Scott is 15.  He can't see this."
Scott tries to block it out and puts on his clothes.  He reaches for his backpack when his mother walks into the room.  "Scott, can you get a ride home from school today?  I don't think I have the time to drive you home between my three jobs."  Scott doesn't respond.  "C'mon, Scott, you know how much I love you and we can't still be thinking about your dead father.  All it does is make us sad.  Gary and I love each other and we can be a nice family."
Scott walks away from his mother trying to cancel her out of his life muttering, “We sure can’t be a nice family with Gary here.”
He starts towards the door and is stopped by his step dad, Gary.  "Boy, you think you can talk to your mother like that?"  Scott walks away when Gary grabs the collar of his shirt.  Scott, trying to hold back his anger quietly lets out, "Get the hell away from me. You're not my dad."
“Get in the car, tough guy.”  Scott walks out of the door and gets into the 1990 Volkswagen with the huge dent on the bumper from when Gary got into a car accident.
“Gary, are you sure you can drive Scott to school today?”  Gary walks out of the door and starts heading to his car.  Just as he enters the vehicle that same smell of scotch rolls into the car.  They start going towards school which is 5 minutes away by car.  Gary was always a fast driver and got into many car accidents.  "Why did mom even choose this creep?" Scott thought to himself.  They are almost at school when Gary stops the car abruptly.
“Get out of the car. You can walk from here.”  Scott opens the door and walks out making sure not to say one word to Gary.  Scott finishes his walk to school and heads to his first class, health.
“Today we will be talking about alcohol abuse.”
“Please, I’m already living it.” says Scott
Suddenly all of Scott’s attention is turned towards the door.  Jenna, who Scott has loved since the 6th grade, walks into class and sits down right next to Scott.
“Hey Scott, what are we talking about in class?”
“Something about alcohol.”
“Oh god.  Are you ready for the big math test tomorrow?”
“Yeah, I’ve been studying a lot.”
“Hey, after school you want to study together?”
“Sure, you can come to my house.”
“Sounds great.  See you then!”
Scott, now in a great mood, finishes the class and starts heading to his next.  The day goes by fast and all Scott can think about is after school when he gets to hang out with Jenna.  After the last period of the day Scott walks to Jenna’s locker where he finds her.
“Ready Scott?”
“Yeah, is it okay if we walk home?”
“Sure, that's fine.”
Scott and Jenna walk home and pull out their math study guide.  When Scott’s mom walks in Scott quickly introduces his mother.
“Mom, this is Jenna.”
“Hey!  Nice to meet you.  Do you guys want anything to eat?”
“I’m dying for pizza”, Scott replies.
“Okay, sounds great.  I’ll order a pizza for pickup.”
“Do you think we should study now or wait till we finish the pizza?” asks Jenna.
“Well, we don’t really have to study that much.  Why don’t we just watch some TV?”
Scott and Jenna go over to their couch in front of the TV and sit down.  They turn the TV on and playing is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
“You guys are watching my favorite movie without me?!” says Scott’s mother excitingly.
“C’mon and join us!” Replies Jenna.
Scott’s mother comes to the couch and sits down.
“She knows every word to this movie” says Scott, playfully nudging his mother.
“Oh God Scott, Jenna won’t be embarrassed by me.” Jenna giggles.
Scott’s mother gets up and starts dancing to Twist and Shout like shes also in high school.  They all start laughing hysterically and join in when all of a sudden they are interrupted by the sound of the front door opening.  Scott stands up in alarm.
“You thought you guys could have a party without me?”  Gary walks in and sits down.
“Gary, we need to talk” replies Scott’s mother.
“I don’t take commands from you,” replies Gary while he slowly stands up.
Quickly Scott’s mother gets up and says, “I think the pizza is ready, Scott.  Jenna do you want to drive with me to get it?”
“You guys can stay and enjoy your love party.  I’ll get the pizza.” says Gary.
“Gary, don’t do this.  We both know you can’t dri-”
The door slams and Gary walks to his car.  Scott’s mother puts her hand on his shoulder and they turn their attention back to the movie which is almost over.  The movie ends and the credits are interrupted by breaking news.
“There has been a huge car accident just 5 minutes ago on Glen street.  The driver of a 1990 Volkswagen is confirmed dead there is believed to be alcohol in the car.”

The Littlest Hitler

I loved this story.  It was short, funny and I still took a lot from it.  I think firstly it showed what little kids really know and without learning about certain things they will make up a whole different think then what really happened in the world.  For example in this story it shows what little the kids know about Hitler and Anne Frank and don't understand the true importance of it.  I don't think I was very affected by the holocaust till 6 grade.  Before 6th grade I knew what it was and could say a couple facts about it but what really affected me what when we saw a video and saw a pile of hundreds and hundreds of dead humans.  This scared me and is the first step that actually got me to understand the holocaust.  Without having a incident like this I didn't know how many people 6 million was and looked at 6 million as just a number with no meaning but now I know that, that is 6 million families ruined.

A childhood story I think would be from my JK (Junior Kindergarden) year.  On the news I heard something about Nazis and thought they sounded cool because they had guns.  My friends and I all day would go around the play ground and call ourselves Nazis and pretend to do secret missions.  I am surprised I didn't get in tons of trouble because at the time I was at Anshe Emet, a VERY Jewish school.   I didn't know a lot about Nazis and thought they were secret agents working for america and because of that I would look up to them.

A Good Man Is Hard to Find

This was another creepy story.  I can't believe someone could kill an old women.  Misfit must have been a sociopath because doing what he does would cause someone to want to kill themselves out of guilt.  If we think about it when someone is killed a whole life has ended and that one person has a family that are now probably depressed.  We talk about people dying all the time and don't realize the effect death has on people.   With that I think it is incredibly hard to kill someone because even if you really wanted to kill someone everything you learned from school and that your parents have taught you is going against that and the guilt is crazy.  This is why sociopaths can be terribly dangerous.

Aside from that, I think the title is just saying good men are hard to find and throughout the story it tells stories about bad men and at the end we find a terrible person that kills an old woman!

Where are you going, where have you been?

This story really creeped me out.  I was just wondering what I would do in this situation and could not think of one good answer.  I think Connie should have been much more cautious about these men and when the man first told her he will get her Connie should have alerted her parents and the police.  Furthermore this story reminds me of a character in the show I'm currently engrossed in, Prison Break.  In Prison Break there is a character that goes by the name of T-Bag and the story reminded me of him.  T-Bag is a sociopath that has committed countless murders and rapes.

A&P

I liked this story.    I liked it mostly because it had a lot of good meanings and was also funny at times.  My favorite part was at the end of the story when the employee thinks that he will impress the women in his store by quitting.  What really happens is he loses his job and his chance with these girls.

My favorite passage is, "A couple customers that had been heading for my slot begin to knock against each other, like scared pages in a chute."  This passage is not necessarily important or have any meaning I just loved how descriptive it was and it gave me the best picture in my head.

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings

This story was intriguing but confused me.  I think it showed a lot about how things pass and there are crazy things that happened and when something new comes nobody cares about the old thing.  For example on the news there could be a story that everyone is always talking about and then something new will come and nobody cares about the old thing.

My questions:

What was the end of the story symbolizing?
What made the author write this?
Was any of this a hallucination or dream?

Half A Day

This was an interesting story.  It is called half a day but its of his whole life.  I was a bit confused of this story but at the end I thought it might be an old man walking with his kid and he crosses a place that he has memories of when he was a kid.  I pictured the grandpa day dreaming and at the end we figure out that he is day dreaming.
